Global Warming : baby boomers blamed
Mis en ligne le 06/02/2007
Baby boomers' lifestyle is being blamed for climate change‚ according to a British study. Yet‚ as governmental initiatives try to make people aware of the problem‚ the over 50s do not feel threatened by global warming.
The Baby Boomer generation is being blamed for increasing climate change as the advent of middle age provides more disposable income to pursue a jet-set lifestyle. The over-50s have been identified as one of the worst age groups for contributing to carbon emissions‚ many showing a worrying lack of understanding over the critical state of the global environment. Researchers from the internationally recognised Stockholm Environment Institute‚ based at York University‚ have launched the biggest study of its kind to target the over-50s. An initial three-month study has been conducted by the team led by Dr Haq‚ including a survey of more than 700 over-50s throughout North Yorkshire‚ with a series of focus groups. In their initial research for the Climate Talk project‚ academics have identified a concerning trend among many of the over-50s who believe global warming will not affect them during their lifetimes. But others have also expressed concerns that they are leaving behind a legacy of climate change which will affect future generations. Dr Harry Haq says "They may have heard a lot about global warming‚ but they do not realise it will impact on them‚ and is already impacting on them." Flights abroad have been identified as a huge cause of carbon emissions‚ and remain one of the most contentious elements in the battle against global warming. The Yorkshire Post this month launched its own debate on the environment‚ called A Green Future‚ to highlight the global warming issue. Other Government-funded projects in the region include a Bradford scheme which is using community radio to inform the West Yorkshire city's disadvantaged and ethnic minorities populations about climate change.
