Japan
Only 16% of Japanese boomers will stop working completely after retirement

Mis en ligne le 28/11/2005

Nearly 80 percent of Japanese baby boomers, now between 55 and 59 years old, are willing to work after reaching the statutory retirement age of 60, and only 16 percent say they will no longer work after that time. 39 percent hope to remain employed by their present employers and 15 percent want to start new businesses.

The Nomura Research Institute said its poll has found nearly 80 percent of Japanese baby boomers, now between 55 and 59 years old, are willing to work after reaching the statutory retirement age of 60, and only 16 percent say they will no longer work after that time.
Of those willing to continue working, 66 percent wish to have a monthly income range of 100,000 to 300,000 yen, indicating their acceptance of a lower income than at present.
On how to work, 39 percent hope to remain employed by their present employers and 15 percent want to start new businesses.
In this respect, the institute said baby boomers could substantially increase the annual number of business launchings by retired workers in Japan, which now totals around 90,000.
