United States
Seniors are taught to be aware of safety issues

Mis en ligne le 21/01/2008

With the population of older Americans increasing as baby boomers reach retirement age, a local foundation has announced plans for a Jan. 30 conference focused on the safety and protection of older people.

By 2020, people age 60 and older will be one-fourth of the population of Ventura County, a record amount, officials say. "That's why it is so urgent that with the bulge of baby boomers beginning to show up now", agencies and individuals kick into higher gear in awareness, education and action, said Christine Voth, grants and planning manager for the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging. "Every day someone in Ventura County is becoming 60. Every day someone is becoming a caregiver for Mom or Dad or Grandma and Grandpa. Every day a senior who was fit yesterday falls down, breaks their hip and now needs help", Voth said. This urgency is why Seniors : "How Safe Are You ?" was picked as the theme for the fourth annual Senior Congress. Eighteen years ago in Ventura County, there were 86,000 seniors age 60 or older. By the year 2010, the percentage of seniors in this same age bracket will jump from 12.86 percent in 1990 to 18.51 percent in 2010 and to 24.25 percent in 2020. The foundations expect 300 attendees at the Congress. As the baby boomer bump gets bigger, "we're having to balance this with seniors who are living longer but may be frail", Voth said. "Because of this increase (in number of baby boomers), there will be a significant demand on public services." Voth personally believes one senior safety issue stems from technology advances like the Internet, computers and the ability to duplicate fraudulent documents that look real. "Ten years ago, who heard of identify theft ?", said Voth. Elder abuse ? "That issue is very prominent now", said June Glasmeier of Thousand Oaks, Senior Congress co-chairwoman. Glasmeier and Voth hope that by bundling self-protection information, the Senior Congress may snag the attention of folks who don't realize the risks and impacts of ignoring safety.
